mPackting harnesses the power of carbon storage

In the face of escalating concerns about climate change and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, finding innovative ways to mitigate the levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has become paramount. While efforts to decrease emissions are crucial, an equally essential approach lies in capturing and storing CO2 instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. mBlack is the compound material that stocks CO2 in the long term.

The Need for Long-Term Carbon Storage:

The concentration of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere has reached alarming levels, mainly due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation. These rising CO2 levels contribute to global warming and climate instability. To combat this, it is crucial to reduce emissions and also to actively store that CO2 it in a manner that prevents its release back into the air for a longer amount of time.

Long-term carbon storage is of utmost importance as it offers a sustainable solution for effectively mitigating climate change. By sequestering CO2 for extended periods, we can effectively reduce the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and minimize their impact on global warming.

Introducing a mBlack: Storing CO2 in cosmetic packaging

mPackting introduces mBlack, an innovative moldable material. mBlack is a novel solution that comes from an organic supply chain. In fact, it is made using the wood by-products Minelli S.p.a. creates during their production. This waste is upcycled, processed with a heating treatment, that makes it an effective carbon-sink, and then compounded into a bio-polimeric blend.
Finally, as our products reach their life’s final stage, they can still benefit our planet: mBlack, in fact, is biodegradable and compostable, meaning it leaves no microplastics behind, while also enriching the soil after being broken down by micro-organisms

The whole process can be described as “carbon capture and utilization” or “CCU”, not only capturing CO2 but also converting it into valuable products, creating a dual benefit of carbon reduction and resource utilization.

The CO2 , gets chemically bonded within the material, preventing its release into the atmosphere, contributing also to a better resource management and to an improved LCA score for the products.

The key benefits of addressing climate change with a carbon absorbing material:

  • Climate Mitigation: By storing CO2 for extended periods, we can effectively reduce greenhouse gas concentrations, mitigating climate change and its adverse effects on the planet.

  • Resource Management: Utilizing compound materials for carbon storage allows for the transformation of waste products into valuable resources, promoting a circular economy and sustainable resource management.

  •  Environmental Restoration: Long-term carbon storage promotes ecosystem health by providing an opportunity to restore degraded lands. By enhancing soil fertility and promoting reforestation efforts, carbon storage contributes to ecological balance and biodiversity preservation.
