Premium refill lipstick made with plant-based material

Premium refill lipstick made with plant-based material

Lipstick tends to be less recyclable because of its physical nature and the mix of materials and decorations that typically characterize them. We believe that our responsibility is to make this product easily recyclable and of course refillable to drastically reduce its carbon footprint and make it more sustainable overall.

Have you heard of the lipstick index? The so-called lipstick index, coined by Estée Lauder's Leonard Lauder, is the theory that sales of affordable luxuries rise in economic downturns. Consumer psychologist Dr Cathrine Jansson-Boyd said there was evidence people attempt to boost their mood with small treats in difficult times.

In other words, people consume more lipstick to brighten their day, when the world around them is not so bright.

Lipstick tends to be less recyclable because of their physical nature and the mix of materials and decorations that typically characterize them. We believe that our responsibility is to make this product easily recyclable and of course refillable to drastically reduce its carbon footprint and make it more sustainable overall.

Lipstick shouldn’t be a waste but a beautiful object worth keeping.

Design for re-use and recycling

We have developed the SILVA range with low-carbon materials and refillable options. The outer shell can be made of wood, mBlack™ (proprietary low-carbon and compostable material), or other materials of your choice, and the inner component is made with a universal interface, which means that it fits any outer case. The universal core acts as a ring and is inserted in the base, hosting the mechanism and making sure that it will smoothly work with any lipstick. The point of the universal core/insert is that with the same mould, we can have different combinations of the packaging solution. For example, external shapes can be cylindrical, conic, curvy or sinusoidal.

The mechanism is currently by Albéa and it is a very common model that has been extensively used and tested allowing for smooth product applications.

Just a quick recap:

  • Cap is made in solid wood

  • Mechanism by Albéa

  • Base shell: wood, mBlack™ , or in principle any material you want

This premium refillable lipstick could also be mono-material, made using mBlack™ for example.

All components are easy to separate at the end of life for easy refillability and/or recyclability. Lipsticks are available in different shapes, materials and finishes.

Plant-based materials

One way to further reduce the environmental footprint is to use plant-based materials such as Wood, Cork, Bioplastic, mBlack™, pulp, or Bagass (green PE). mPackting benefits from the expertise of its parent company Minelli which has been making wood components since 1937.

mPackting’s designs use carbon sink materials that intrinsically absorb and trap Carbon from the atmosphere in the long term, effectively acting as a climate cooling agent.

For instance, using mBlack™ allows us to reduce the carbon impact of your product by 30% compared to the same product made using traditional plastics (cradle-to-gate analysis). mBlack™ is a proprietary bio-composite and it is 100% biobased (non-fossil resources), it is made using treated upcycled wood waste, it removes CO2 from the atmosphere and it stores it for centuries, it is compostable and it does not leave microplastics behind.

Wood, cork and pulp also act as carbon sinks since they absorb carbon dioxide in the form of trees.

Thanks to our family roots, it’s fair to say that we understand and master complex materials. And mostly for premium product applications.

Premium & refillable

Thanks to multiple finishing options, the refillable lipstick can also be adapted to your brand design and reflect your brand’s personality with no compromise on quality.

Overall, we can offer premium refillable lipstick made of plant-based materials that will be an excellent example of how the cosmetic industry can become more sustainable and environmentally friendly. By using renewable and biodegradable materials and reducing the amount of plastic waste produced, this lipstick is a step towards a greener future.
